Prison Island

One hour drive from your hotel takes us to Stone Town, where we board a boat, which will take us to Changuu Island, better known as Prison Island.

The Swahili name Changuu derives from a fish, which is common in its surrounding waters. Its English name originates from a prison, which was built there in 1893 by the British First Minister of Zanzibar. However, no prisoners have ever been housed in it. Instead it eventually became a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. Nowadays, the island is a government-owned tourist resort, and is home to a collection of endangered Aldabra giant tortoises, which were originally a gift from the British governor of the Seychelles.

After finishing the tour across the island, there is an option to snorkel in the surrounding waters.
